Aging siblings Matthew and Marilla require help to deal with the many challenges of operating a farm. They turn to an orphanage to provide them with a boy who can assist. Instead, much to their surprise, they are sent the irrepressible, fiery red-head, Anne Shirley – that is, Anne with an ‘e’.

At first, the precocious Anne has difficulty assimilating into rural life, often clashing with her classmates, members of the community and even the stoic Marilla.
